Why Kids Should Wear Computer Glasses

Updated: Jul 11, 2019

Let's just admit it. Our kids spend more time in front of digital devices than we would like to admit. It's ok, you're not a bad parent for allowing a little free time on the computer or tablet.

Now that we got that out of the way let me tell you why you may want to consider investing in a set of kids computer glasses.

The Dreaded Blue Light

Data has started to come in showing the potential negative effects that over exposure to blue light can have on the health of our eyes. Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the worst of them all (not much data to prove this yet) but blue light is also thought to contribute to sleep disorders and Computer Vision Syndrome; more commonly known as Digital Eye Strain.

Digital Eye Strain is a byproduct of spending too much time in front of digital devices. Here are a few things that happen:

  • We don't blink as much as we should and so our eyes get dry.

  • Focusing on things within a 2' range puts a lot of strain on our Ciliary muscle and in turn can make it hard to focus properly.

  • Too much time in front of a bright screen can cause cause night blindness.

  • A Harvard study shows Blue light can provoke sleep disorders due to the light making our mind think that it's actually earlier than it really is.

The Growing Use of Digital Devices

Another reason to have kids wear computer glasses is to establish good eye care from an early age. You tell your kids to put on their sunglasses when they go outside don't you? Well, just as sunglasses should be worn as early as possible, same thing goes for computer glasses. You want to establish good eye care habits in children's so that they continue with them as they get older.

They are never going to use less digital devices, it is only going to increase. I have a child in kindergarten and they already have computer lab. I didn't have computer lab until I was in highschool!

If Apples latest conference is any indication of what's to come, tech companies like apple, samsung and microsoft are going to have their tablets in schools all over america in the next few years. We are at a point where there is no going back. Digital devices are a part of work and education, the best thing you can do is teach your kids how to protect their eyes.

In Conclusion:

The number one suggestion I could make is to limit the amount of time children 6 and under spend on digital devices. 30-45 minutes a day is too much so work the time down from that.

The second suggestion would be to eliminate any digital device exposure at least 2 hours before bedtime. The blue light stimulates their mind in a negative way and could lead to sleep disorders. If you use it for book reading, switch your phone or tablet to night mode; this will reduce the intensity and cut the blue light.

Lastly, get a set of computer glasses that fit your budget. There aren't as many kids options as their are for adults but i'll leave you a few options below. There is something for everyone.
